What is IOT ?

Information technologies and connectivity have been strengthened through developments in Artificial Intelligence. This has made Internet access increasingly easier for people and, in some parts of the world, at very low cost.

It is thanks to the Internet that the world has been revolutionized in such a way that its transformation goes far beyond technology, since its uses include entertainment, business, research, military and financial activities, etc. 

All this has allowed developments in electronics to revolve around the Internet and the creation of devices that can make frequent use of the network, so much so that a term has been coined to refer to any object that can be connected to the Internet: Internet of Things.

Currently, this concept refers to devices that can receive and transmit data to other objects, regardless of the type of connection they have with the Internet network. In other words, it is a digital network of interconnected devices, allowing data exchange, information capture and processing, as well as the application of artificial intelligence techniques (Machine Learning) to solve different problems autonomously. 

Under this perspective, IOT devices (which are interconnected with other devices), communicate with each other using any digital communication channel, regardless of whether it is Bluetooth, Internet, Intranet (Ethernet), wifi, etc., and perform their tasks without the need for human intervention, under a process called “machine to machine” or M2M. 

All the information generated by the connected devices (data) reaches a platform where it is collected, processed and analyzed, in order to create an informed action; from predicting an action, to making decisions related to the tasks assigned to it. 

Thus, through IOT it is possible to connect a smartphone with any electronic device at home that shares this technology, being able to control elements such as lighting, air conditioning, and receive notifications of the status of a car, among other things.

Fregata Space makes use of devices equipped with sensors that capture data generated around water bodies. The data generated by the sensors are received in their servers and through Machine Learning and Big Data techniques, they can generate data about the pollution levels in the water bodies, as well as the pollutants present on their surface. This processed information finally reaches the mobile devices of its associates, who can monitor water pollution from anywhere on the planet.
